employment report before tuesday's election is in. with something for both candidates to talk about. we're going to go over all the numbers in a moment with former labor secretary robert reich but first we'll update you on the ongoing recovery from hurricane sandy. after the better part of the week without heat, light and other necessities millions in the new york city are desperate for some relief. so a bit of good news. hundreds of thousands in manhattan could get power back by midnight tonight. yet around the region, many are waiting as long as four hours to buy gas. fortunately new york's subway commuter rails are coming back and officials say the gas shortage should ease by midweek. meanwhile, the annual new york marathon has been canceled. many said it would divert needed resources from the cleanup and it was insensitive to the millions still suffering from the effects of the storm. adding up the sandy's grim totals. at least 102 dead including 41 in new york alone. some 3.6 million homes and businesses still without power. and $50 billion in losses. and now for some good news for

serious nate silver now predicts the president has a 78.4% chance of winning the election. nate silver looks at this huge mess of polls and pulls out which have historically been the most reliable and weighs them based on their representtive sample, and weighs them based upon their polling accuracy and polling method and the party dentation of that state's electorate, and the political contributions in each state, and the favorability of both candidates. early voting, that also seems to be bearing him out. across the swing states the president leads by between 2 and 26 points among early voters. okay. all of that great political euphoria aside, we can't get ahead of ourselves, because there is one thing that could bring us down from that political euphoria which is the popular vote. the national polls show now an extremely tight race. two polls have a tie. so the popular vote could still go either way. let's take a look at that. on the national map. i want to -- i want to emphasize that i'm looking at the national map because of hurricane sandy and how hurricane sand

with the presidential election in its last full week of campaigning to go. these are some pictures we recently got in of the worst damage so far from delaware to north carolina, new york, and new jersey. the president left the campaign trail today and returned to washington canceling campaign stops in florida and ohio and a rally planned for tomorrow in wisconsin. a little more than an hour ago, the president spoke at the white house briefing room on preps in place to help the nearly 50 million people who could be affected by this natural disaster. the president did answer one question about the storm's impact on the race. >> i'm worried about the impact on families and i'm worried about the impact on our first responders. i'm worried about the impact on our economy and on transportation. the election will take care of itself next week. >> as for governor romney, around noon eastern time today, the romney campaign announced it is canceled all planned events tomorrow in wisconsin and florida out of what it calls, quote, sensitivity for the millions of americans in the storm's path. the governor did

, that this could end an electal college tight. there are 32 ways in which that could happen. thirty-two. it is not entirely the unthinkable. let's go over one of the most plausible possibilities. right now president obama can safely count on 201 electoral votes. that is unchanged from yesterday. romney can safely count on 191. that is changed. that has changed because north carolina, and let me bring this up today here. north carolina was moved to the tossup category just yesterday. that accounts for the 15 votes that moved away. so where he had at 206, 206 to 201, now 191. and let's turn now tto of romney who needs to win north carolina. he is still up in the polls by a significant margin, but four points. yesterday it was more than five. we have that. romney would need also to win, just as before, the state of florida, 29 votes. let's get that. and he is up two points in florida. he also needs virginia where he is up by one point. let's go there. he is building 248. colorado, where both candidates are tied up right now 48-48. we will give that to governor romney as well. we will m
